In a recent conversation my colleague, Wendy Robbins, asked me this important question:
"You could dream big, but I hear people get started and then they have something, a little temporary defeat, and they forget that's part of the game. And so they feel like they're a failure before they began, or they're afraid to take that risk. Can you speak to that?"
Actually, the whole Chapter 8 of The NEW Think and Grow Rich, which is titled "Persistence," speaks to that. Really, it's crazy-achievers don't think like that. Remember, Think and Grow Rich?
A lot of times people are afraid. That's what procrastination generally is. They're afraid they'll make an error, they're afraid they'll get judged, they don't have self-confidence. They think that more planning, more analysis is a good thing-and really it's a bad thing masquerading as good sense, which is why it can be so seductive.
The truth of the matter is, you will have setbacks. Every level, every enterprise, every organization, every project, you will. But think about this. Let's just say that you're about to get on a plane to fly from LA to Sydney, a trip of several thousand miles. Would you like a pilot who has never seen turbulent skies flying? Absolutely not!
So the whole thing about trying to avoid problems is erroneous thinking to start with. Reframe them into challenges, reframe them for the things that they really are. You should never seek to have a life free of problems and challenges, because you will be in the grave when you get it.
You should seek, rather, to be flexible enough, adaptable enough, educated enough, motivated enough, thoughtful and resourceful enough to respond, solve, and overcome any challenge that comes up.
